Holy Orders

This is a sacrament of service by which some are called by God to be spiritual leaders.

Vatican II reinstituted the ancient practice of calling forth men of Christian commitment and service to study for the Permanent Diaconate. In the Paterson Diocese, new Diaconate classes will have an initial year of discernment followed by four years of formation.

Permanent Deacons:

  • Baptize, officiate at Weddings and give the Nuptial Blessing, lead Prayer Services, and officiate at Benedictions, wakes and burials.
  • They assist the priest at Mass, but are not ordained to consecrate the Eucharist. They preach at Eucharist and Prayer Services.
  • They are not ordained to hear confessions or anoint the sick, although they do visit and bring Eucharist to the homebound or those in hospitals.
  • Most deacons are married men, with families, working at a variety of professions.
  • Permanent Deacons promise a life of service to the People of God.
